Air travel can be a very uncomfortable experience. In fact, it can be one the most uncomfortable periods of time, depending on where you fly, and which airport you happen to be in. From the long waits, to having your flight delayed and winding up taking a snooze on the floor, it’s no fun. And, of course, once you actually get on the plane, you may well have to survive a layover, and have to go through the whole rigmarole a second time.

On the other hand, there are some that are so fantastic, and so carefully designed to satisfy customers, that they may be the best part of your journey. Some people, in fact, whether businessmen, tourists, or those heading off on a gambling trip, may just wish to divert their journey to these ports on purpose.

Skytrax World Airport Awards

There are likely few who pay attention to airports, unless they are specifically in one at the exact moment. At which point, the quality of that establishment will suddenly fall sharply into focus. What exactly does it offer in the way of comfort, relaxation, and distraction? For the most part, these essential venues will do whatever they can to keep customers happy and satisfied, but only up to a certain point. There may be a few restaurants and gift shops, but not much beyond that.

Then you have those that scoop awards at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. And yes, in case you were wondering, these awards are considered prestigious. Given out to the best in the world, you’ll hope that your delays are in travel hubs this impressive.

Changi – Singapore

Voted the best airport in the world, for six years running, is Changi in Singapore. But before we get to just why it is so acclaimed, just how exactly do the top awards get chosen? It seems that surveys are done, taken from millions of travellers around the world. From the results, the decisions are made.

Edward Plaistered, the CEO of Skytrax, stated simply that the overwhelming praise for Changi was simply a demonstration of the enormous popularity that it has with international travellers. So, what did earn such praise from travellers?

The Ultimate in Luxury

In most airports, a person would be happy to sit at a table, drink a cup of coffee and use the free Wi-Fi to browse the net, play at a casino online, or catch up on the news. And yes, you can indeed enjoy this at Changi, but there’s so much more beyond that. How about two 24-hour a day cinemas, showing the latest blockbusters from around the world? And, did we mention, these cinemas are free to travellers?

Sounds too good to be true? Then how about a rooftop swimming pool, also free to travellers, as well as a sunflower garden that showcases a variety of sunflowers from around the world? Where on earth do these sunflowers come from? Why, they’re grown right there, at the on-site nursery. Imagine the effort that must go into maintaining the sunflower garden alone, never mind the two free 24-hour a day cinemas.

Interestingly enough, almost all the top ten in the Skytrax winners list are located in Asian countries, with the top three almost always being Asian. Munich, which previously held fourth place, has dropped down to sixth, making it seem less likely that any other region in the world has a chance of putting up a fight. Why Asian countries have such a love for being number one in the airport department is unknown, but the rest of the world could sure take a lesson or two.
